About the event

M.C.: Bryan Wright

120 years ago, Scott Joplin published his “Palm Leaf Rag,” the theme piece of this year’s festival. In naming his rags, Joplin often turned to the plant kingdom for inspiration — think of “Maple Leaf Rag,” “Pine Apple Rag,” “The Sycamore,” “Weeping Willow,” and “Heliotrope Bouquet.”

Many of Joplin’s contemporaries and generations of ragtime composers since have also named rags of varying temperaments after flowers, fruits, trees, and other plants. Some of our performers have greener thumbs than others, but all have the nimble fingers needed to bring this garden of botanically-oriented ragtime to vivid life!
